Most people think of the face when they think of acne.  But acne can actually occur on many areas of the body like the back, chest and scalp.  Scalp acne is a relatively common problem.  It can be painful and hard to treat scalp acne because it is often hidden below lots of hair.

Acne on the scalp can be caused by some of the same things that cause facial acne, including stress and hormonally changes.  Acne usually occurs when the scalp, for what ever reason, is producing an excess of oil.  Extra oil can build up on the hair follicle allowing bacteria to get trapped inside the follicle.  This trapped bacteria will cause pimples and bumps to form.  An acne breakout on the scalp may be very itchy.  Scratching unfortunately only makes the problem worse.  It can cause infection and more breakouts.

There are different degrees of scalp acne.  It is sometimes pretty mild with a few smaller bumps.  They may be crusty and sore and often concentrated around the hairline.  Some cases of scalp acne are more severe with larger bumps and cysts that are enflamed.  Severe forms of acne may cause scaring and can be quite painful.

Even though scalp acne appears similar to facial acne, it has to be handled with different treatments.  Things that are good for facial acne like benzyl peroxide are not appropriate for use on the scalp.  Benzyl peroxide has been known to bleach hair and in some cases even cause hair loss.    These types of chemical will also make the scalp too dry and cause more problems.  Some natural ingredients that help to balance oil production on the scalp are zinc, jojoba oil, and emu oil.  These ingredients work to wash away impurities and create a proper amount of oil on the scalp.  Scalp health depends on a delicate balance of oil.
